MULTIRAMBLAS is a research project about Barcelona, the contemporary city and the places of tourist attraction.

BBarcelona has become a reference city on the tourist scenario, and this position as one of the great touristic and cultural destinies has improved a feeling of  confidence and ”urban self-esteem” , but it has also generate some unexpected conflicts between the civic-domestic scale of the city and the large global flows of foreigners, tourists and a change of the activities that now fill the city’s streets and avenues.
Along with Gaudi and the Sagrada Familia, Las Ramblas strip became a city’s icon, a mark of identification and attraction for the whole world.
This research aims to:
-Recognize the current context of the Ramblas and its urban, spatial, cultural, economic and  social-environmental repercussion, from the point of view of its relation with the new attractive phenomena associated with the contemporary urban and  tourist destinations.
- Quantify statistically this context and create a critical and purposeful diagnosis, of the processes, as well as the trends and the evolutionary potential.
-Define possible scenarios and applicable criteria on different scales
-Create referential proposals, actions and strategies of operative action.
-Create a  condition of required contents in order to elaborate one or more format of  diffusion, exposition and communication, not necessarily specialized
- Create material for discussion, opinion and proposal for the citizens.

“Redefinition of the tourist-urban model of Barcelona"- IC ESADE 08

The Barcelona Model, was a local management experience internationally recognized, that tried to combine the improvement of infrastructures and urban equipment, correct the city’s social inequalities, ameliorate the quality of life and urban design focused on the improvement of the esthetic and physical space quality, enhance decentralization towards the districts and autonomous entities and promote civil participation.

Barcelona, especially since ’92, has become, like other coastal metropolis, a big attractor of tourist and  immigration flows. The urban policy and the tourist strategy of Barcelona’s metropolis has not always proven to go hand in hand in the last 10 years, on a medium and long term planning process of a new urban model consistent with the changes induced by its new social corpus.
This research aims to explore Barcelona comparatively with other tourist metropolitan concentrations with the aim of:
- establishing a qualitative dimension of a coastal tourist metropolis, in terms of the pondering factors related to its geographical and territorial structure, its dimension and population type, its economical model and its resources;
- defining the role, the potential, and the possible conflicts derived from the fast development of the physical and digital infrastructures in all public and private sectors involved in the process of making decision and actual proceeding upon the territory;
- exploring a new strategic vision based upon a system of indicators related not anymore related to an industrial society, but to one dependent on the tertiary sector; characterized, above all, by the emphasis acquired on the qualitative in relation to the dominance of the quantitative.

This research is the starting point of the debate that will occur on the 2nd International Symposium XXL Tourism, organized by Intelligent Coast in Barcelona in November 2008.

" Dream cities - Master IC* 2008

The ranking of tourist cities we study tends to rate cities based primarily on the number of tourist arrivals.
This research will analyze which and how many are the factors that influence the tourist arrivals to urban destinations as well as identify which are the elements that influence tourist collective imagination and that create the idea of a dream city.

 Intelligent Coast is working this year on exploring a new ranking of dream cities around the world through different indicators.

Sprawl Phenomenon

The “Sprawl” tourist topography is the spatial consequence of the residential tourism phenomenon. We analyze some typologies of tourist sprawl  looking for good practices for its management, in order to evaluate the possibilities to limit the risks of this system.

TICs and Low Cost Phenomenon

On a large scale the low cost phenomena is contributing to transform the European coast in a megalopolis and on a urban scale it increases the services demands. What’s attractive for a tourist when he is planning a travel? Why does a low cost company choose a destination for its flights? And what are the citizen’s expectations from his own town where there is a low cost airport?

Architectural Accommodation Typologies

The study of architectural accomodation typologies defines:

[A] The use of the architectural image as communication media of a message of consumption.
From the idea of refuge to nomadic settlement, through the "suburban escape".
It has been edited a catalog of tourist qualitative architecture defined by three main parameters:

1. High-tech at XXL scale. Processes of fast and efficient developments;
2. Architecture as a Brand;
3. Elements of experimentation and innovation.
